The Brink's-Mat Robbery: £26m of Gold Nobody Expected

· 107 seconds

In November 1983, robbers broke into a warehouse near Heathrow expecting cash and found three tonnes of gold. The Old Fox tells how an inside man gave them away, and why much of the gold was never seen again.

- On 26 November 1983, six robbers broke into the Brink's-Mat warehouse on the Heathrow International Trading Estate in west London (Wikipedia, 'Brink's-Mat robbery'; History Hit).

- A security guard helped the gang with a key impression and details of the security; he confessed in December 1983 and was jailed for 6 years (Wikipedia; History Hit).

- Instead of cash, the gang found about three tonnes of gold in some 6,800 bars, plus diamonds and travellers' cheques: £26 million in all (Wikipedia; History Hit).

- The two ringleaders were each jailed for 25 years (Wikipedia; History Hit).

- Much of the gold was melted down and recast, and by the mid-1990s about half was thought to have found its way back into the legitimate gold market (Wikipedia).

What the fox said

Some robbers dream of a fortune. This lot tripped over one. Let's see what's on.

Saturday the twenty-sixth of November, 1983. Dawn, at a warehouse on a trading estate beside Heathrow Airport.

Six armed men get inside. They've had help. A security guard has passed them details of the security, and an impression of the key.

They think they're there for cash. What they find is gold.

Three tonnes of it. Around six thousand eight hundred bars.

Plus diamonds and travellers' cheques. Twenty-six million pounds, all told.

They load the bars into a van, and drive off into the November morning.

But the guard's story doesn't hold. Police find a family link to one of the robbers. Within weeks, he confesses.

The two ringleaders get twenty-five years each. The guard gets six.

But the gold? That's harder to catch. Much of it is melted down and recast, mixed with copper to hide where it came from.

Then, piece by piece, it slips back into the legitimate gold market.

By the mid-1990s, it was thought around half of it had gone that way. Gone for good.

Which is why some say anyone in Britain wearing gold bought after 1983 could be wearing a little bit of Brink's-Mat.

Check your wedding ring. Case closed. Keep your nose to the wind.
